Innovative Superkicker Structural System by SME Steel
The Palazzo Condo Hotel Tower at The Venetian consists of an incredibly unique design featuring diagonal superkickers supporting 50 of the 57 stories. Each superkicker is 130´ in length and supports up to 48,000 kips of dead load while cantilevering over existing swimming pools. There is a maximum 1/2˝ plumb tolerance at any given point on the tower which shifts 30´ and then 60´ east. This project is a composite structure of box columns and wide flange columns. The first four floors are within the footing and entirely encased in 3´ thick sheer walls. Continuous pile footings run underneath the foundation footing at an impressive depth of 165´. There is a 3´ thick core wall which centers within the entire structure. The lateral bracing system is primarily eccentric and concentric brace frames as well as standard moment frames and a hybrid brace system nicknamed Texas Longform brace frames invented specifically for this project which resemble opposing Ys. SME provided value engineering with a cost savings of approximately $1,000,000 to the Owner.
