Welder

Job Duties

Able to layout, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms such as building members, columns, frames, and other parts using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and any applicable engineering requirements. 

Responsibilities

  • Position components for assembly according to shop drawings
  • Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment
  • Certified with both stick and wire in vertical position
  • Observe tests on welded surfaces such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications
  • Remove rough spots from work piece using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
  • Heat, form, and dress metal parts using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment
  • Ignite torch and adjust valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc
  • Develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts
  • Determine required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques
  • Move structural elements by hand and machine through the use of chain rigging, overhead/jib crane, material conveyor, or transfer stations and other material handling equipment
  • Inspect equipment, structural components, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Able to pass 2G and 3G with back gouge test
  • Able to work on product alongside welders and fitters
  • Able to perform end prep
  • Able to safely operate a grinder
  • Operate overhead and jib cranes safely
  • Understand what is expected of weld quality, proper fit placement, and finished product
  • Understand material grades and differences
  • Stay on task
