SME and Hassett Engineering are amazing partners in realizing complex structural engineering design. They bring their vast amount of experience to the table in a very cooperative and friendly manner to calmly discuss construction concepts facilitating the early development of practical structural systems and connection details. This collaboration between structural designers and builders has great benefits for early on cost certainty by exploring alternatives to make the best decisions before the construction document phase. SME and Hassett Engineering help us avoid most of the costly interruptions, distractions, delays, re-design, out of phase design work and unrealized cost savings that afflict value engineering. Their skills, knowledge and experience will help you build anything that you could imagine and design as long as it is possible and reasonable to construct.

111 Main Office Tower, Salt Lake City, Utah

To whom it may concern:

Okland Construction Company is currently under construction on a 24 story office building that has some of the most unique structural systems of any building of its type in the United States.

Essentially, one third of this building (20 stories high) are cantilevered over the top of a brand new Performing Arts Center. This requirement came to be, due to the strong desire of two prominent owners (LDS Church and SLC RDA), to have these world class facilities on this particular site in the Central Business District in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. In order to achieve this feat—the design team came up with a unique “Hat Truss/Crown Truss Design” that requires the entire steel structure to rest on (6) bearing plates at the top of a 380” tall, 32” concrete core. In order to erect the building, SME installed (6) 5” Stainless steel cables and 450 tons of temporary steel that supports the entire structure until these loads can be transferred to the Hat Trusses. Transferring the loads, required SME to purchase (36) 200 ton-500 ton jacks, a control system, and an incredibly sophisticated erection process to achieve this milestone.

I cannot speak highly enough about Mark Mundy and his SME team (Including consultant Pat Hassett) that led the design-assist effort for 8 months alongside of Okland Management and Skidmore Owings Merrill (SOM) who are the Architects and structural engineers of record. Mark and Pat’s experience was superior to anyone in the Utah marketplace. The details required to pull this off were mind-numbing and SME’s participation has been exceptional throughout. In addition, SME’s preconstruction department led by Justin Pitts provided that remarkable experience that we as a General Contractor were looking for.

There is no question that SME was the “BEST” local steel contractor to fabricate and erect this one-of-a-kind building that will become a show place and an extension of the $2b City Creek Development and the new home for Goldman Sachs.

I highly recommend SME for ANY commercial building project. They are a very sophisticated group that will always be competitive and provide substantial value.

Respectfully,

Troy S. Thompson

Primary Children's Medical Center Ambulatory Care, Salt Lake City Utah

Dear Jeff (Torgersen):

Jacobsen Construction Company has a subcontractor recognition program called the Jacobsen Extra Miler (JEM) Award. The objective of this award is to recognize employees of subcontractors who consistently perform in an extraordinary and effective way over a four month period on one or more of our projects.

Congratulations on winning our award! We very much appreciate your contributions to the ongoing success of the Ambulatory Care project. Our project team commends you: working steel through winter months can be challenging but you worked safely and sequenced your work for on time deliveries with a very small lay down area. You also coordinated your work to cooperate with garage activities and you met all schedule dates. Our project team commented, “It has been a pleasure to work with Torgy on this project.” Overall, you are clearly an extraordinary, “extra mile” employee. We appreciate working with professionals like you…

We hope to see you on many more of our projects.

Respectfully,

I have worked with SME Steel Contractors on multiple large projects over the years and I look forward to doing so again in the future.

The nature of projects that I have worked on with SME have been complex in nature with aggressive schedules and they have always risen to the occasion and performed.

Their true strength is their ability to adapt and respond to not only what is going on in the field but also changes that are issued by the design team.

Their field and office management are fair and solution driven professionals. It is part of their culture, from the top down, to find solutions to challenges rather than point fingers.

Our relationship with SME has always started out strong at the beginning of our projects together and has only gotten stronger as the projects have completed.

Levi's Stadium, Home of San Francisco 49ers, Santa Clara, California

I just wanted to tell you that I greatly appreciate the effort SME did on the bridge this weekend and the Job Southwest steel did on the aluminum welding of the signs.

I am so proud of your companies for jumping in and solving a mess on the signs and the awesome safety and erection of the bridges. Both were nothing short of an A-Plus / FIRST CLASS rating.

It gives me great pride in writing this because SME / Southwest has always done anything I have ever asked on this project without complaining, arguing, etc. Your firms have been so great on this project. I have no more words to say than AWESOME and THANK YOU.

You guys are the best, and I know we will all be friends for life as that is just as important. From safety to erection to management TOP DOWN, thanks again to all. I don’t know everyone, but I hope you tell each and every worker what I think of them ALL. This is what you get when you work as a TEAM.

THANKS AGAIN!

eBay Topaz Data Center, South Jordan, Utah

Skanska recently completed a 240,000 square foot, tier IV data center in South Jordan, UT in which SME provide all structural and miscellaneous steel. This was Skanska’s first project in this region and came to the area without any prior knowledge of the Subcontracting community. Because it was a new region, a considerable amount of time was spent on Subcontractor vetting. SME stood out as a first class company from the initial meeting. We came to SME with what was thought to be an unattainable goal. We had 5% design documents at the time and needed steel onsite in 6 months. SME worked with Skanska to develop an approach to the project that would ultimately deliver success to the A/E, Skanska, and SME.

SME was able to begin structural steel erection on the exact day that we had agreed upon 6 months earlier. At the same time, the structural design of the building was economized with the help of SME which resulted in approximately $1 million in savings to the project.

I consider SME to be one of the few Subcontractors in the market that could be considered a true partner. We are well aligned with our approach to safety; they deliver on promises, and are an integral team member when it comes to budget management and design assistance.

We look forward to working with SME in the future.

Sincerely,

Thank you for you kind comments. I wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed working with SME. I sincerely appreciate how you have always made me look good because of the great job you have always done. The IMC MOB that set a record for speed and minimal problems. Salt Lake Clinic for the incredible coordination and sequencing without any staging area. Primary Children’s that astounded everyone. SME is undoubtedly the example for the entire construction of how to do it. I have always enjoyed bragging about your work.

Thanks for everything.
