San Diego State University Aztec Student Union SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

SME Industries

San Diego State University Aztec Student Union achieved the elusive LEED Platinumcertification on this project notwithstanding the added logistical challenges of a tight job site on an active campus. SME Steel completed the steel package of this project with more than 30,000 field hours and a flawless safety record. Adding to the complexity, this project was erected utilizing two cranes over an operational subway tunnel, University campus facilities, and the Metropolitan Transit System. This unique structure includes several architectural elements such as arcades, courtyards, balconies, and arches which incorporate complex steel components. Eighteen “broken-back” members, 80´ in length and weighing approximately 6 tons each, were fabricated, shipped, and erected as single pieces in order to eliminate field splicing which shaved two weeks from the schedule. Due to SME Steel’s skill and craftsmanship, this project schedule was impressively completed in roughly half the expected time frame.
