The 111 Main 26-story office tower in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, is an engineering marvel and the only one of its kind in the world. The structural engineering reflects an innovative solution to a complex site challenge. The entire structure is suspended from a steel hat truss on top of the building with cantilever levels hanging over an adjacent structure. This unique structure begins with temporary steel on level one and the first main floor of the building is level three. Level two hangs from level three and is unattached to the main structural columns creating a 35′ high lobby. On level five, cantilever levels hang over an adjacent structure and rises 19 levels to the top of the building. Cables and an intricate jacking system comprising the support for the building during construction and were removed once the hat truss was engaged.
