The CNC Supervisor will be responsible for the following:

  • Assigning specific tasks to the various work stations and personnel

  • Maintaining and verifying man-hour usage logs

Detailer

Reports to: Detailing Manager

Principle Subordinates: In-house Detailers
Minimum Qualification: High School Diploma, Diploma, or certificate from a Technical Institution or College. Minimum of one year’s experience as related to the responsibilities as listed below and structural steel detailing.

The Chief Draftsman is responsible for supervising the Detailing staff and providing drawings that represent the requirements of the contract specifications.

The requirements as a minimum shall include:

  • The use of standard AISC and AWS symbols
  • Material specifications (as per ASTM standards)
  • References to special fit up or welding requirements
  • Bolt material and installation requirements
  • Nondestructive testing requirements
  • Number revisions of details on drawings
  • Maintaining the drawing logs as directed by the Detailing Manager
  • Following up on Requests for Information (RFIs) issued to customers pertaining to drawing changes and revisions
  • Providing for communications with Production and Quality Control Department

Detailer | Checker

Reports to: Detailing Manager
Freedom to Act: Under the direction of the Detailing Manager and the established policies of SME Steel.

Minimum Qualification: High School Diploma with three years’ experience or Diploma/Certificate from a Technical Institution or College with one year’s experience as related to the responsibilities as listed below and structural steel detailing.

The Lead/Chief Draftsman is responsible for supervising the Detailing staff and providing drawings that represent the requirements of the contract specifications.

Responsibilities, as a minimum, shall include:

  • The use of standard AISC and AWS symbols
  • Material specifications (as per ASTM standards)
  • References to special fit up or welding requirements
  • Bolt material and installation requirements
  • Nondestructive testing requirements
  • Indicating and reporting acceptance or unacceptable conditions
  • Complete a detailed review of shop drawings, sketches, computer models, and erection drawings, verifying at a minimum the following, prepared by other detailers:
    • Geometry
    • Use of correct connections

Job Description – Fitter / Welder (all levels “A” and “B”)

JOB SUMMARY: Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as building members, columns, joists, frames, stairs, railings, and other parts using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements. Includes welders who analyze engineering / detail drawings and specifications to plan welding operations where procedural information is unavailable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications using appropriate tools and measuring devices
  • Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations
  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment
  • Certified with both stick and wire in vertical position
  • Cuts work piece using torch or machine as necessary
  • Observes tests on welded surfaces such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications
  • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances using caliper, tape measure, or framing square
  • Removes rough spots from work piece using portable grinder, hand file, or chipping hammer

JOB SUMMARY: The Forklift Operator is responsible for operating an industrial forklift to move, locate, relocate, and stack finished product, incoming production materials, and miscellaneous commodities. The Operator is accountable for the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle and may also be required to perform other associated duties. They are responsible for inspecting and maintaining lift equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Transfer, process, and load all steel materials and other goods using appropriate forklift technique and lifting practices
  • Organize steel materials, finished product, and other goods in clean, appropriate locations
  • Pull and prepare finished steel product for shipment as scheduled
  • Ensure all outbound shipments are accurate and free of damage
  • Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner following prescribed work methods

Maintenance Mechanic

Job Description – Maintenance Mechanic (all levels)

JOB SUMMARY: The maintenance mechanic monitors and repairs the working of assigned machines. Responsible for production output by maintaining or adjusting the speed of the machine, load, operating speeds, or other related factors. Some mechanics will work with the Operator to program or set up the machine’s operating system to effectively manufacture various commodities, while others will basically tend the machine’s maintenance. Mechanics need a good understanding of the working mechanisms of the machine(s) and its operating system and how the machine integrates with SME Steel’s fabrication system. The mechanic is responsible for the safe operation of the machine and the continuous operation of the same.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Manage the maintenance of all types of production machines (from simple to complex) and also ensure that machines are cleaned and well maintained
  • Adjust and operate speed and control the load of assigned machine(s)
  • Monitor the finished products obtained from the machine(s) to ensure that the quality and quantity produced matches SME Steel’s requirements
  • Maintain all required maintenance, record logs, and charts as needed
  • Perform basic maintenance such as oil and grease machinery to ensure machinery is operating properly
  • Maintenance Mechanic level ‘A’ is able to efficiently repair and maintain any SME Steel system(s) / equipment without any outside supervision
  • Maintenance Mechanic level ‘B’ is able to efficiently repair and maintain several systems / types of equipment with limited supervision

Painters | Coatings Prep Personnel

Reports to: Paint Manager and Lead Person
Freedom to Act: Under the direction of the Coatings Manager or lead Person and within the general guidelines described in the SME Steel Program and within the established policies of SME Steel.
Principle Subordinates:  None
Minimum Qualifications: Complete SME Steel In-House Training and demonstrate abilities by performance evaluation. Ability to comprehend verbal and written instructions by oral evaluation. Minimum of two weeks’ experience as an assistant to a qualified individual in the application of coatings to structural steel. Capable of lifting up to 45 lbs.

The Coatings Personnel are responsible for the following:

  • Quality of their work
  • Following shop procedures and project specifications
  • Performance of assigned duties
  • Daily inspection of equipment used
  • Performing duties in a safe and efficient manner
  • Cleanliness of work area/station
  • Proper care and use of SME equipment
  • Proper use of required personal protective equipment
  • Completion of documentation as required in the Coatings Manual
  • Coordinating work with other coatings personnel
  • Maintaining member marking throughout the coatings process

Project Executive

Reports to: Vice President of Project Management
Freedom to Act: Under the general guidance of Project Management, within the established policies of SME Steel, and any applicable laws.
Principle Subordinates: The Project Techs 1, 2, 3, and Field Project Superintendents
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Minimum of three years’ experience related to responsibilities listed below and/or structural steel fabrication and erection.

The Project Executives are responsible for the following:  

  • Contract management in the reviewing and interpreting of contract requirements, and ensuring compliance with the contract specifications
  • Setting, tracking, and maintaining schedules for fabrication and shipping
  • Managing project finances through budget planning, cost analysis, payment scheduling, change order requests and cost projections, claims, etc.
  • Managing shop resource allocations by developing production priorities
  • Managing the flow of information between production, quality control, shipping, field erection crews, and project management
  • Distributing copies of the subcontracts, plans, and specifications to Engineering, Quality Control, and Production Departments and Field Operations, including:
    • Special instructions from the Engineer of Record

Principle Subordinates: None
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma, GED, Certificate of training from a Technical School or equivalent. Minimum of six months’ experience using the welding process to be qualified. Complete and pass Drawing and Weld Test in accordance with the SME Steel program. Capable of lifting up to 45 lbs.

The Welder | Fitter is responsible for the following:

  • Quality of their work
  • Following SME Steel shop procedures and project specifications
  • Performance of assigned duties
  • Daily Inspection of equipment used
  • Performing duties in a safe and efficient manner
