High-Seismic Structural Steel Erected Within a Constrained Research Campus

QB3 (California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research Institute) is the Biotechnical and Medical Engineering School for the University of California, San Francisco Mission Bay Campus. Due to limited ingress, this structure was skillfully erected from the side utilizing a 225 ton crawler crane to access the interior of the building. More than one hundred cruciform CoreBrace™ Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) were incorporated due to the high seismic area. Additionally, SME fabricated and erected a unique 40 ft roof screen. Thanks to SME expertise, this project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule.
