Record-Setting Long-Span Truss Erection by SME Steel

To keep the BYU–Idaho Center on schedule, the team reversed the steel erection sequence, so the roof could be set first and the building could be enclosed before heavy snowfall. As a result, the contractor gained a protected, temperature-controlled workspace earlier in the timeline.

Because of SME’s deep experience and trusted reputation, we were brought in during the design phase to help streamline detailing, fabrication, and field coordination. This early collaboration helped maintain the tight temperature-tolerance requirements needed for the trusses to fit with precision.

During installation, the 260-foot, 100-ton topping-out truss was carefully set between the 120-foot, 100-ton king truss and the precast walls with just six inches of clearance. In addition, SME fabricated and erected the King Truss—recognized as the largest truss ever erected in the State of Idaho. To complete the venue layout, the indoor track was raised 12 feet above the perimeter of ten full-size basketball courts, maximizing both space and functionality.
