Stronger Steel. Stronger Communities.

SME Steel has a core belief in giving back to the community.

SME Steel is proud to support the communities in which we live and serve. As a trusted structural steel contractor, we believe our responsibility goes beyond the jobsite. Through community partnerships, volunteer efforts, and local support initiatives, SME Steel is committed to strengthening neighborhoods, supporting local organizations, and making a positive impact wherever we work. Our dedication to quality steel fabrication and erection is matched by our commitment to giving back to the communities that make our work possible.

Teamed Up: Building Bonds and Forging Futures

The Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club announced today a new multi-year partnership with SME Industries, Inc., one of the largest structural steel fabricators in the United States, to benefit foster care youth in Utah. The agreement creates a new program called Teamed Up: Building Bonds and Forging Futures that will cover full-season participation fees in Utah Hockey Club’s Learn to Play and street hockey, as well as Jazz Youth programs. Scholarships will also be available for youth to participate in the Jazz’s annual 3v3 tournament and a wide range of specialized camps and clinics. Scholarships will be awarded individually, and participants may receive funding for more than one program.

Historic Wendover Airfield

SME Steel and Southwest Steel are proud to have contributed to the restoration of an important piece of history at the Historic Wendover Airfield.

The reconstructed World War II bomb-loading pit offers visitors a closer look at the equipment and engineering used during a pivotal moment in American history. Wendover Airfield served as the training base for the 509th Composite Group, and this restoration helps tell that story in a meaningful, tangible way.

Using modern scanning technology along with historical research, SME Steel and Southwest Steel helped recreate the bomb-loading cradle to match the original pit as closely as possible. It’s a unique project that reflects both the precision of today’s steel fabrication and the importance of preserving the past.

We’re honored to be part of work that combines craftsmanship, history, and purpose, and grateful for the opportunity to support the ongoing restoration of one of the most historically significant airfields of the World War II era.

Steel Strong Golf Tournament

SME Steel proudly hosted its annual Steel Strong Golf Tournament at the Glenmoor Golf Club, bringing together employees, partners, and community supporters for a meaningful day on the course. This year’s tournament served as a charitable fundraiser benefiting Raise the Future, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children in foster care find permanent, loving families. Through generous sponsorships, participation, and community support, Steel Strong once again reinforced SME Steel’s commitment to giving back, strengthening communities, and supporting life-changing causes beyond the jobsite.

Gold Star Clay Shoot

On June 6, 2025, Mortenson’s Utah team, alongside valued market partners and dedicated community members, came together at Wasatch Wing & Clay in Eagle Mountain for the third annual Gold Star Clay Shoot. This meaningful and impactful event brought together 180 shooters, 38 volunteers, and 32 generous sponsors in support of American Military Family (AMF), a nonprofit organization committed to preventing suicide among veterans and first responders.

American Military Family’s mission is both urgent and essential. Every 65 minutes, a veteran dies by suicide—a sobering and constant reminder of the complex and often invisible challenges our nation’s heroes face long after their service ends. Thanks to this year’s Clay Shoot, participants helped raise an impressive $100,000 to support AMF’s life-saving efforts, which help connect veterans in crisis with the critical services, support networks, and resources they desperately need.

One of the most moving and memorable moments of the day was the heartfelt tribute to U.S. Marine Corporal Kyle W. Powell, a courageous hero who served with honor in Iraq. Attendees signed a beautifully hand-crafted wooden American flag, which was then presented to his mother, Nancy Powell—a deeply emotional and symbolic gesture honoring his life, legacy, and ultimate sacrifice.

“This year, we were deeply inspired by our returning donors and participants who came together with one mission—to stand beside our veterans,” shared Elijah Larson of Mortenson’s Utah team. “Through their generosity, we raised more than we imagined in support of our country’s military families and to honor the challenges our heroes face after returning from service.”

The Gold Star Clay Shoot continues to grow as a cherished tradition of remembrance, unity, and action. We are truly grateful to all who helped make this inspiring event a resounding success.

SME Steel Field of Dreams

After viewing the plight of the West Jordan Rotary Club and their inability to fully fund a baseball park for disabled children, SME Steel quietly stepped in and wrote a check for the difference. In gratitude for this gift, the park was named “SME Steel Field of Dreams.” At the inaugural game, each child took a turn at bat, each one scored and there were no outs; however, amongst the cheers there were tears of appreciation in knowing just how much this truly had become a field of dreams.

SLC Veterans Cemetery

One evening as Craig Moyes, Co-Founder of SME Steel, was watching the evening news, he saw the disturbing deterioration of the Veterans Cemetery which is located inside the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Headstones were sinking, tilting, and some were broken. Mr. Moyes immediately offered to donate the materials and labor needed to restore the headstones to their proper form. Today, they are a fitting tribute to Utah’s veterans.
