Dieter Klohn

President and Chief Executive Officer

Dieter Klohn brings an impressive 50 years of experience in the steel industry. Mr. Klohn has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise being incredibly proficient in streamlining operations and creating highly competitive companies. He has managed a wide range of projects in the United States and all around the globe from buildings and bridges to stadiums and refineries. As President and CEO, Mr. Klohn is instrumental in guiding all aspects of the day-to-day operations of SME Industries. His responsibilities include providing direction to all leadership teams, communicating corporate vision, and implementing performance accountability for more than 1,200 employees. These duties span plant operations located in West Jordan, Utah; Pocatello, Idaho; Phoenix, Arizona; and Las Vegas, Nevada. He is considered an expert on many levels. Mr. Klohn possesses membership in American Welding Society and American Institute of Steel Construction for over thirty years. He is also a long time member of American Society of Civil Engineers and a voting member of American Society for Testing and Materials National Committee.

 

Gordon Holladay

EVP, Finance and Administration, Secretary-Treasurer

Gordon Holladay, SME Industries EVP, Finance and Administration, and Secretary-Treasurer, has been with SME Industries, Inc. since its inception in 1992. He is a strategic business partner to the senior executive leadership team. Gordon participates in pivotal decisions as they relate to strategic initiatives and operational models. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. Gordon also served on the Board of Directors for Simon Transportation for two years. In 2011, he was selected as CFO of the Year by Utah Business Magazine.

Mel Pollard Jr.

Chief Financial Officer

Mel Pollard Jr., SME Industries CFO, is a highly experienced financial expert and is a licensed CPA in Utah. He manages the financial reporting and assesses financial risks and opportunities with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets, and forecasts. Mel oversees and manages the accounting team who sets and tracks financial goals, objectives, and budgets. He identifies, develops, and executes analyses of business initiatives, systems implementation, product launches, and new service offerings.

 

James Rivera, SMS CHST

Vice President, Safety

James Rivera, VP, Safety, is a highly experienced Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) professional who has developed and successfully implemented safety systems in steel fabrication, erection, manufacturing, and construction environments. He has become a safety expert in both behavioral based safety systems and process safety management programs. James is responsible for HSE strategic leadership and support based on management systems and metric-based fundamentals with significant overlap into operational aspects. As a results-focused team leader, he brings proven success in mentoring and developing peak performing teams. James leverages problem-solving expertise to drive continuous improvement within people-based processes through outstanding leadership. His core competencies comprise HSE technical and soft leadership skills including safety management, safety engineering, environmental science and regulatory compliance, industrial hygiene, strategic planning, leadership disposition, and business acumen.

Chad Moyes

Special Projects

Chad Moyes brings a great deal of experience with his 17 year career in the structural steel industry. He provides leadership to achieve and maintain effective operational, safety, and environmental performance. Chad develops a highly capable leadership team through ongoing coaching, development opportunities and accountability. 

Michael Wamsley

Director of Shop Operations

Michael Wamsley, SME Steel Contractors Director of Shop Operations, has 30+ years of experience in the structural steel industry. He is responsible for planning and organizing production schedules, assessing project and resource requirements, ensuring health and safety regulations are met, ensuring quality control standards are met, organizing the repair and routine maintenance of production equipment, and assisting in organizing relevant training sessions. Michael has excellent communication and leadership skills. He possesses significant interpersonal skills and is intensely service oriented as demonstrated by his positive, down to business approach and direct communication. Michael brings an understanding of and experience with fabrication processes and procedures across the United States.

John Ivey

Pocatello Plant Manager

John Ivey, SME Steel Contractors Pocatello Plant Manager, has 20+ years of experience in the structural steel industry. He is responsible for planning and organizing production schedules, assessing project and resource requirements, ensuring health and safety regulations are met, ensuring quality control standards are met, organizing the repair and routine maintenance of production equipment, and assisting in organizing relevant training sessions. John has excellent communication and leadership skills. He possesses significant interpersonal skills and is intensely service oriented as demonstrated by his positive, down to business approach and direct communication. John has experience with every imaginable range of steel structures from relatively simple to very complex, together with extensive experience with HCPD, OSHPD, and LEED certified projects.

Jesse Sloan, SCWI

Field QA/QC

Jesse Sloan, SME Steel Contractors Field QA/QC, brings an impressive wealth of knowledge and experience in Quality Assur­ance, Quality Control, and Inspections specific to the structural steel and welding industry encompassing a span of 20+ years. Jesse has a complete and working knowledge of quality requirements of industry codes and standards with extensive experience in supervisory and management positions. He prepares, writes, reviews, and maintains the Field quality control system; modifying for project specific conditions. Jesse performs internal quality assurance functions to ensure continuous improvements. He performs audits on vendors and subcontractors for compliance to project purchase order requirements. Jesse interfaces with contract and jurisdictional authorities on quality related issues. He provides guidance and training for proper inspection procedures, methods, tech­niques, and the documentation required to support it. Jesse supervises all activities related to inspection, weld­ing procedures, erection and welding materials, and welding qualifications. He provides traceability of materials with supporting documentation and establishes inspection and quality control procedures for all SME products.

Daniel Christensen, ASNT NDT Lvl III, CWI, NACE CIP 1, CQA

Shop QA/QC

Daniel Christensen, SME Steel Contractors, Shop QA/QC, brings an impressive wealth of knowledge and experience in Quality Assurance

and Quality Control and inspections specific to the structural steel and welding industry. Daniel has a complete and

working knowledge of quality requirements of industry codes and standards with several years in supervisory and management positions. He prepares, writes, reviews, and maintains the quality control system, modifying for project specific conditions. Daniel performs internal quality assurance functions to ensure continuous improvements. He performs audits on vendors and subcontractors for compliance to project purchase order requirements. Daniel interfaces with contract and jurisdictional authorities on quality related issues. He provides guidance and training for proper inspection procedures, methods, techniques, and the documentation to support it. Daniel supervises all activities related to inspection, welding procedures, fabrication and welding materials, and welding qualifications. He provides traceability of materials with supporting documentation and establishes inspection and quality control procedures for all shop products.

Matt Godsey, PE

VP, Project Management 

Matt Godsey is a highly qualified project leader and quality control professional with substantial experience in leading the entire western region of the United States including extensive field and shop QA/QC oversight. He is a licensed professional engineer with an M.S. in Civil Engineering with a focus on structures. Matt is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the SME Steel Contractors Project Management Department. He brings an impressive resume of experience within the construction industry and continued technical training. Matt has a wide depth and breadth of successful management of construction personnel, contractors, and vendors in addition to implementation of compliance for procedures and policies in accordance with specifications, codes, and laws. He sets high standards of excel­lence for himself and his teams in collaborating to implement strategies as well as overseeing quality and pro­ductivity. Matt provides exceptional support coupled with in-depth knowledge of construction methods, programs, equipment, and power to navigate project sites with ease.

Ryan McKinney, PE, SE

Director of Engineering

Ryan McKinney is a licensed professional and structural engineer with an M.S. in Civil Engineering who is a natural leader, team player, self-motivated, resourceful, and adapt­able professional structural engineer. Ryan provides cost-effective solutions to building structural challenges while mitigating risk coupled with creating maximum value to the client. He is detail oriented with excellent verbal, written, and technical communication skills. Ryan’s core competencies include analytical thinking, problem solv­ing, and engineering-related software programs. Ryan performs presentations internally and externally on various technical/design practice topics of seismic design.

 

Tyler Winkley, Assoc. DBIA, PE, SE 

Director of Preconstruction

Tyler is a licensed PE and SE in California and Washington with an M.S. in Civil Engineering who is responsible for implementing all performance criterion related to Design-Assist Preconstruction contractual obligations for SME Steel Contractors. This includes direct collaboration with and input to the Struc­tural Engineer of Record, Architect, General Contractor, and equally important, Critical Path Subcontractors. Tyler is the primary communications interface between our client and the SME Estimating, Project Management, Shop Production, and Field Operations departments. Tyler oversees the early pre-planning, scheduling, specifi­cation conformity, site-specific safety programming, and cost controls of a project—all in advance of the eventual transition to the Construction phase—which coincides with complete turnover to Project Management for full execution.

 

Justin Pitts

Vice President, Chief Estimator

Justin Pitts has an impressive background of experience in the structural steel industry with an emphasis in structural engineering, estimating, preconstruction, and sales. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the SME Steel Contractors Estimating Department. Justin quotes structural steel fabrication and erection projects and services. He envisions difficult installation and fabrication sce­narios. Justin quantifies the number of hours to fabricate structural steel, determines installation schemes to establish crew sizes and duration, and evaluates bid drawings, specifications, and general conditions. He determines scope of work and vague areas to qualify bids while seeking opportunities for value engineering. Justin posts bid negotiations and assists with revi­sions. He has excellent communication skills coupled with decades of extensive, comprehensive, and varied experience.

Paul Breitenbach

Vice President, Field Operations

Paul Breitenbach, Vice President, Field Operations, is responsible for all SME Steel Contractors Field operations in order to achieve timely completion of each project. Paul diligently directs Area Superintendents for their day-to-day onsite supervision of Field labor force, inspects contractor or (sub)contract operations to ensure compliance with the contract, develops and maintains site logistics plan in coordination with Site Superintendents and Project Executives, communicates and enforces the SME Safety Program, and manages schedules including preparation of detailed short-term schedules and ensures all activities take place on or ahead of scheduled dates.

Randall Chin

Area Superintendent | NorCal and Pacific NW

Randall Chin, Area Superintendent | NorCal and Pacific NW, brings many years of experience in the steel industry which spans an impressive array of skills. Randall is responsible for SME Steel Contractors Northern California Field operations in order to achieve timely completion of each project. He diligently directs day-to-day onsite supervision of field labor force, inspects contractor or (sub)contract operations to ensure compliance with the contract, develops and maintains site logistics plan in coordination with Site Superintendents and Project Executives, communicates and enforces the SME Safety Program, and manages schedules including preparation of detailed short-term schedules and ensures all activities take place on or ahead of scheduled dates.

 

James Jones

Area Superintendent | SoCal

James Jones, Area Superintendent | SoCal, brings many years of experience in the steel industry which spans an impressive array of skills. James is responsible for SME Steel Contractors Southern California Field operations in order to achieve timely completion of each project. He diligently directs day-to-day onsite supervision of field labor force, inspects contractor or (sub)contract operations to ensure compliance with the contract, develops and maintains site logistics plan in coordination with Site Superintendents and Project Executives, communicates and enforces the SME Safety Program, and manages schedules including preparation of detailed short-term schedules and ensures all activities take place on or ahead of scheduled dates. 

Brandon Ott

Area Superintendent | Utah and Nevada

Brandon Ott, Area Superintendent | Utah and Nevada, is responsible for SME Steel Contractors Utah and Nevada field operations in order to achieve timely completion of each project. Brandon diligently directs day-to-day onsite supervision of field labor force, inspects contractor or (sub)contract operations to ensure compliance with the contract, develops and maintains site logistics plan in coordination with Site Superintendents and Project Executives, communicates and enforces the SME Safety Program, and manages schedules including preparation of detailed short-term schedules and ensures all activities take place on or ahead of scheduled dates.

Monet Johnson

Vice President, Marketing

Monet Johnson, SME Industries Vice President, Marketing, holds a triple major Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Communications, Political Science, and English, in addition to multiple certifications across finance, change management, conscious leadership, international business, and emotional intelligence. Monet is responsible for marketing, public relations, and community outreach. As VP, Marketing, Monet provides the planning and leadership necessary to ensure appropriate structures and systems are developed to support marketing plan goals for all SME Industries companies. Additionally, she works closely across multiple departments to manage the RFP process and provides high-level support in the areas of leadership assistance, government and political affairs, social events, and client relationship management.
