Dieter Klohn brings an impressive 50 years of experience in the steel industry. Mr. Klohn has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise being incredibly proficient in streamlining operations and creating highly competitive companies. He has managed a wide range of projects in the United States and all around the globe from buildings and bridges to stadiums and refineries. As President, Mr. Klohn is instrumental in guiding all aspects of the day-to-day operations of SME Steel. His responsibilities include providing direction to all leadership teams, communicating corporate vision, and implementing performance accountability for more than 1,200 employees. These duties span plant operations located in West Jordan, Utah; Pocatello, Idaho; Phoenix, Arizona; and Las Vegas, Nevada. He is considered an expert on many levels. Mr. Klohn possesses membership in American Welding Society and American Institute of Steel Construction for over thirty years. He is also a long time member of American Society of Civil Engineers and a voting member of American Society for Testing and Materials National Committee.
Chad Moyes brings a great deal of experience with his 17 year career in the structural steel industry. Chad supervises a staff of more than 200 shop employees in our 400,000 square foot fabrication facility. He is responsible for the effective management and profitable operation of the SME Steel Plant and uses process improvement techniques to continually drive improvements in quality, costs, delivery, and service. Chad provides leadership to achieve and maintain effective operational, safety, and environmental performance. Chad develops a highly capable leadership team through ongoing coaching, development opportunities and accountability. He implements safety and environmental practices and regulations, including OSHA compliance, with a proven record of improving safety results.
Gordon Holladay has been the Chief Financial Officer and Secretary/Treasurer for SME Industries, Inc., since 1992. Mr. Holladay is responsible for all finance, accounting, records, tax reporting and audited statements for SME Industries.
Mr. Holladay is a graduate of Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He also served on the Board of Directors for Simon Transportation for two years.
In 2011, Mr. Holladay was selected as CFO of the Year by Utah Business Magazine.
SVP Sales and Marketing
Christian Klink, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Southwest Steel and SME Steel Contractors, is responsible for establishing sales targets to meet company objectives. He is responsible for developing strategic sales plans based on company goals to promote growth and customer satisfaction, develops annual sales plan, directs implementation of execution of sales policies and practices, ensures communications are coordinated, supports sales plan objectives, and meets organizational expenditure requirements for marketing, Christian is a proven leader with an impressive background which enables him to successfully build, develop, and manage sales and marketing teams for Southwest Steel and SME Steel Contractors.
Vice President Safety
Weldon Mann, VP Safety, is a highly experienced Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) professional with over 18 years in increasing leadership positions. Weldon has developed and successfully implemented safety systems in steel fabrication, erection, manufacturing, and construction environments. He has become a safety expert in both behavioral based safety systems and process safety management programs. Weldon is responsible for HSE strategic leadership and support based on management systems and metric-based fundamentals with significant overlap into operational aspects. As a results-focused team leader, he brings proven success in mentoring and developing peak performing teams. Weldon leverages problem-solving expertise to drive continuous improvement within people based processes through outstanding leadership. His core competencies comprise HSE technical and soft leadership skills including safety management, safety engineering, environmental science and regulatory compliance, industrial hygiene, strategic planning, leadership disposition, and business acumen.
VP of Project Management
Landon Moyes, VP of Project Management, is an SME prodigy. He began his career working in the maintenance department and working progressively upward to his current position by demonstrating his advanced acumen for problem-solving and by delivering remarkable job performances with each new role. Landon is responsible for the day-to-day execution of duties and performance milestone achievements of all SME Steel Contractors Project Managers. He possesses significant interpersonal skills and is intensely service oriented as demonstrated by his daily interactions with contractors, clients, subcontractors, and colleagues. With his years of experience in every level of the company, Landon understands all phases of steel construction including 3D modeling and detailing, critical path scheduling, material procurement, subcontracts and requisite submittals, shop production, estimating, field coordination, site logistics, and equipment optimization. His hands-on knowledge includes all Division 5 products and services as well as HCPD, OSHPD, and LEED certified projects.
John Saari, Construction Manager, SME Steel Contractors, is an onsite project manager with the primary responsibility of planning and overseeing the progress of specific projects. He determines how and when work will be performed including prep work and a deliverables schedule in order to provide a road map to ensure the project is completed on time and in the most cost-effective manner. John brings a wide wealth and depth of knowledge and experience in construction management. He is a valuable asset to our project construction management in the Field. He is a dedicated employee with the clear capacity to take on the many challenges which come with his role. Robert Jensen has 24 years of experience in the structural steel industry. He is responsible for planning and organizing production schedules, assessing project and resource requirements, ensuring health and safety regulations are met, ensuring quality control standards are met, organizing the repair and routine maintenance of production equipment, and assisting in organizing relevant training sessions. Robert has excellent communication and leadership skills. He possesses significant interpersonal skills and is intensely service oriented as demonstrated by his positive, down to business approach and direct communication. Robert has experience with every imaginable range of steel structures from relatively simple to very complex, together with extensive experience with HCPD, OSHPD, and LEED certified projects.
Vice President of Field Operations
Alan Funston, Vice President of Field Operations, brings over 35 years of experience in the steel industry which spans an impressive array of skills. Alan is responsible for field operations in order to achieve timely completion of each project. He diligently directs day-to-day on-site supervision of field labor force, inspects Contractor or (Sub)Contract operations to ensure compliance with the contract, develops and maintains site logistics plan in coordination with Site Superintendents and Project Executives, communicates and enforces the SME Safety Program, and manages schedules including preparation of detailed short-term schedules and ensures all activities take place on or ahead of scheduled dates.
Evelyn Wallers, Administrative Executive, manages a wide array of responsibilities involving the daily administrative activities of the executive offices including scheduling meetings, travel, and representing SME Steel on an executive level. Evie plays a critical role in facilitating fluidity across several areas including corporate fleet, corporate insurance, bonding, client relations, and hospitality suites. Her attention to detail coupled with the ability to multitask are core strengths and are evident in her diligence, dedication, and delivery.
Patty Johnson, Marketing Director, holds a triple major Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Communications, Political Science, and English. Patty is responsible for marketing, public relations, and community outreach. As Marketing Director, Patty provides the planning and leadership necessary to ensure appropriate structures and systems are developed to support marketing plan goals for all SME companies. Additionally, she works closely across multiple departments to manage the prequalification process and provides high-level support in the areas of leadership assistance, government and political affairs, social events, and client relationship management.
