SME Steel Celebrates 30 Years of Structural Steel Solutions

To construct the (W)rapper Tower, a 17-story office building with no central columns, the design and construction team is implementing a specialized steel frame exoskeleton around floor-to-ceiling glass windows. This one-of-a-kind commercial space will hold two lower levels of parking and a two-level event deck area for recreation. The seismic base isolation ensures that in the event of an earthquake, the building moves freely. The Levi’s® Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, has an open design anchored with spacious entry plazas. Photovoltaic panels and a green roof are two of the sustainable design features. The fourteen-acre stadium features 68,500 seats with 9,000 luxury seats and the ability to expand to 75,000 seats for the Super Bowl. The steel structure is designed to resist seismic loads utilizing CoreBrace buckling restrained braces (BRBs) and is the first NFL stadium to use BRBs. Integrated bridging design-build (IBDB) coupled with BIM is the delivery model of choice for this project. The Owner, General Contractor, and design teams provided impeccable follow-through which allowed this project to have an aggressive, fast-track schedule.

San Diego Federal District Courthouse is an innovative and energy conscious structure comprising 16 levels above grade, two levels below grade, high-security parking structure, 14 courtrooms, and 21 chambers. The tower rises above a transparent and translucent building base. This LEED Gold facility uses the latest technology to facilitate an open, legal process as well as using recycled materials and floor to ceiling windows to allow for maximum access to natural light.

Newport Beach Civic Center features a unique wave-inspired roof structure which channels wind and cools the building. Pristine stairs and custom railings provide ease of access with secure and pleasurable walkways together with the pedestrian bridge which creates a connection over the wetlands area of the property.

Disney Cars Land is comprised of a complex mountain range together with a racers building. Due to the complicated detailing, this project was design build utilizing 100% Building Information Modeling (BIM) capabilities. SME Steel assisted with a detailer on site to collaborate a smooth erection process. Tab points on each piece of steel were surveyed using satellite technology ensuring precision installation. The mountain range is an intricately detailed design of tube steel and channel construction reaching 121ʹ at its highest point.

The City Creek project encompasses two full city blocks: Block 75 and 76. The erection of Block 75 consists of five levels of structural steel that cover the entire block in addition to high rise buildings. SME Steel also erected the structural steel for Building Four, a seven-story structure, along with four podium levels and one roof mechanical support level on Tower Five, a twenty-three story structure. Block 76 includes four major buildings ranging from five to eight stories and interconnects with two levels of commercial space accessed by a series of bridges, elevators and escalators. Additionally, SME Steel erected three levels of mechanical support on Tower One, a 32-story high rise, as well as two levels of mechanical support on Buildings Six and Seven, twin ten-story structures. The transfer deck support plate girders range from 175 pounds per foot to an incredible 720 pounds per foot with an average length of 60 feet.

CityCenter comprises a 67-acre community of luxury towers, retail and entertainment space, convention center, gaming facilities, and residential buildings. This is one of the largest sustainable developments in the world and earned six U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold certifications. Two 300-ton Manitowoc 2250 crawler cranes operated simultaneously to position the convention center clear span trusses which measured an astonishing 20ʹ deep by 220ʹ long with an average weight of 208 tons each. Cantilevered trusses support the glass garden wall system with no bearing on the ground. Two complex radius porte-cochères adorn the entrances. Due to SME Steel’s diligence and expertise, this massive project was completed on time.

World Market Center III is a conventional building with an unconventional approach. 596 Buckling Restrained Braces were incorporated into the design, which made it lighter, faster to erect, less expensive to build and protected against seismic activity. The foundation begins with a five-foot thick spread footing. Three cranes were continuously used to decrease schedule time further. SME Steel successfully completed this massive undertaking, comprising detailing, fabrication, and erection in less than twelve months coupled with a savings of several million dollars to the owner. This complex structure showcases skewed bilateral steel symmetry with an overlapping and dynamic geometric design.

The Oregon Health & Science University Peter O. Kohler Pavilion was constructed on and attached to the side of a rock cliff dropping six stories on one side and creating a ground level entrance on the other. The structural design utilized a double moment frame with cruciform columns and was built in an extremely congested area requiring construction to take place inside the footprint of the building. FEMA guidelines were met for this difficult and unique L-shaped and curved structure. In order to accommodate the need for additional room height, wide-flanged columns were split and welded together off-set creating enormous columns that require less internal space. Additionally, floor beams were swallowed in the concrete slab to further maximize room height.

The resort contains 1,001 Arabian Nights – an exotic main casino themed after the tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights. It offers 100,000 square feet of gaming amidst flying carpets, ebony horses, and an ever-blooming “Enchanted Garden” of lights. A unique stacked layout places the hotel lobby, casino, and restaurants on separate, easily accessible levels. Aladdin’s innovative design eliminates long walks in public areas. 

Bellagio is a luxury hotel and casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip. Inspired by the Lake Como town of Bellagio in Italy, AAA Five Dimond Bellagio is famed for its elegance. One of its most notable features is an 8-acre (3.2 ha) lake between the building and the Strip, which houses the Fountains of Bellagio, a large dancing water fountain synchronized to music.

The Salt Palace Convention Center was skillfully erected utilizing two cranes simultaneously. Flawless AESS banana trusses support the unique roof structure of the perimeter while 260ʹ triangulated trusses, weighing in at 180 tons, adorn the ceiling of the convention center. SME Steel meticulously fabricated AESS rolled tube steel composing the interior tree columns and branches. The cylinder tower pieces were shop assembled and transported via oversized loads in only eight separate panels forming the circle while limiting the number of field weld connections. This structure was awarded Silver Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

With the greatest views of the Las Vegas Strip and the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States, the 1,149-foot-tall Observation Deck creates unobstructed 360° views and features SkyJump Powered, a controlled descent that spirals you down the iconic STRAT tower, and additional adrenaline-pumping thrill rides.
