SLC Veteran’s Cemetery
One evening as Craig Moyes, Co-Founder of SME Steel, was watching the evening news, he saw the disturbing deterioration of the Veterans Cemetery which is located inside the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Headstones were sinking, tilting, and some were broken. Mr. Moyes immediately offered to donate the materials and labor needed to restore the headstones to their proper form. Today, they are a fitting tribute to Utah’s veterans.
Boys of Steel Charity Golf Tournament
Annually, SME Steel is the key sponsor for the Boys of Steel Charity Golf Tournament wherein 100% of funds raised go directly to support West Ridge Academy (formerly Utah Boys Ranch).
Another notable occasion is the donation of $1 Million for the construction of the West Ridge Academy Athletic Center. Understanding the critical element of recovery and progress through physical exercise, SME Steel donated 100% of the necessary funding to create an athletic center.
Ride for Recovery
Each summer, SME Steel sponsors the Ride for Recovery event—a two hour motorcycle ride culminating with a BBQ, live band, rock wall, inflatables, face painting, prizes, and more. SME Steel partners with Friends of Drug Court to create this event which is a celebration for those who are working to recover from addiction and for their families. Friends of Drug Court, nonprofit assisting in recovery from substance abuse, has a program assisting those who want a second chance at life, who are working hard to change their lives from addiction to proaction. Without this program, addicts have no other alternative from serving jail time. This program gives them a chance at life.
Miracle League of Arizona
SME Steel donated to The Miracle League of Arizona to help them build a baseball park for special needs children—their own spring training facility.
Their dream to have a safe, fun place to meet their friends and play baseball was complete in April 2011.
The blazing Arizona sun made it almost impossible for the children to enjoy this facility during the day. There simply wasn’t enough funding to cover the cost of the “sails” that would create the much needed shade.
Learning of this challenge, SME Steel contacted the Arizona Ironworkers who rallied to help. Their generous donation was the culminating gift.
Habitat for Humanity
Occasionally, SME Steel gathers employees to complete projects for Habitat for Humanity—an organization that builds houses and gives hope in an effort to help eliminate poverty housing and homelessness.
